Bitcoin
Digital scarcity. Open monetary networks.
Overview
Bitcoin is a peer-to-peer digital currency that operates without a central issuer. Its public ledger records transactions and allows participants to verify the rules independently. People discuss BTC as a payment network and as an asset with a predetermined issuance schedule.
Technology
Proof-of-work mining orders transactions into blocks. Full nodes verify consensus rules, while a difficulty adjustment helps keep block production relatively steady. The Lightning Network offers an additional layer for smaller, faster payments.
Use cases
Peer-to-peer transfers, long-term custody, cross-border settlement and payment infrastructure. Users generally hold keys in a wallet or use a custodian.
Key risk
Price volatility, transaction-fee spikes, key loss, custody failures and regulatory differences. Bitcoin transfers are generally irreversible.
